Think about the last time you looked for a pharmacy, a taco place or a locksmith on your phone. Chances are you saw a map with several businesses pinned on it, each with its hours, photos and reviews, and you picked one right there without ever opening a website.
That spot can't be bought. What makes a business appear on Google Maps and in local results is the Google Business Profile (formerly known as Google My Business), and it's free. Here is how to set it up properly and look after it so your business has the best chance of being found by people in your neighborhood.
1. Create or claim your profile
Go to google.com/business using a Google account you plan to keep, ideally one that belongs to the business rather than an employee's personal account. Search for your business name: sometimes Google already has a listing that a customer created. If it exists, request ownership; if not, create it from scratch.
2. Verify that the business is yours
Google needs to confirm you're the owner. Depending on the case, it may ask for a video showing your location, your sign and something that proves you run it, or it may send you a code by phone call, text message or mail. Be patient with this step: until you're verified, your profile won't work at full strength.
3. Choose the right main category
Your main category tells Google what you are. "Restaurant" is not the same as "Seafood restaurant," and "Store" is not the same as "Pet supply store." Pick the most specific option that describes your core business, then add secondary categories only if you truly offer those services.
4. Fill in every detail
An incomplete profile makes people hesitate. Make sure you add:
- Hours for every day, including special hours.
- Phone and WhatsApp, so customers can reach you with one tap.
- Website, if you already have one.
- Service area, if you go to your customers instead of having them come to you.
- A clear description of what you do that naturally mentions your neighborhood and city, for example "family hair salon in the Del Valle neighborhood of San Pedro."
5. Upload real photos and keep adding them
Photos are the first thing people check. Upload pictures of your storefront (so customers recognize it when they arrive), your interior, your products and your team at work. Use your own photos, not ones from the internet. And don't do it just once: add new photos every so often so your profile looks active.

6. Ask for reviews and answer every one
When a customer leaves happy, ask them to leave a review. You can send them the direct link on WhatsApp or keep it as a QR code at the counter. The important part comes next: reply to every review, good or bad. Thank people for the good ones with a personal message. For the bad ones, stay calm, offer a solution and never argue. Whoever reads your reply later will see how you treat your customers.
7. Post updates and offers
Your profile lets you publish updates: a seasonal promotion, a new product or a change in hours. Doing this now and then gives people who find you one more reason to choose you.
8. Connect it to your website
Link your profile to a website that mentions the same neighborhood, the same city and the same services. That way everything tells the same story, and customers who want to learn more have somewhere to go.
Mistakes to avoid
- The wrong category. If Google doesn't understand what you do, it won't know who to show you to.
- A fake address or a PO box style address. Your address should be a real place where you serve customers; if you don't receive visitors, use a service area instead.
- Stuffing keywords into your name. Calling yourself "Martinez Plumbing Emergency Plumber Monterrey Cheap" goes against Google's rules. Use your real business name.
- Ignoring reviews. A negative review with no reply weighs more than one that was answered well.
- Outdated hours on holidays. Few things annoy customers more than showing up to a closed door. Update your special hours before every long weekend.
What nobody can promise you
Be wary of anyone who guarantees you the top spot on Google Maps. Your position depends on several factors nobody fully controls, such as how far the customer is from your business. What is in your hands is having a profile that is complete, verified, active and well looked after, and that is exactly what gives you the best chance.
